Populism Rocks!
People who get into Student Government (SG) say they want to change things. Well, in order to do that, you have to engage more students. And in order to do that, you have to recognize how students feel about SG. Also, maybe it's possible to reach more people through a silly approach first and then keep their attention with thoughtful ideas which ressonate.
Mine is the only campaign that specifically asks non-candidate students on campus for funding. (Although some candidates from other tickets have also contributed to my campaign!)
Here's some perspective: There are two big tickets running this year. They each have 30-40 candidates running with them. My assumption is that most candidates get their funding from family or relatives. (If you count a household as one person, then that means one contributer per candidate. There is nothing wrong with this.) But this means that, give or take, 40 people are financing about 40 candidates per ticket. Meanwhile, I am a one person independent ticket, and as of the third day of campaigning, I have been financed by over 50 students through shirt sales on the West Mall. And I have an email list of about 200 students. We truly are building a populist movement of which students can be a part. Shirt sales fund my campaign and go towards a day of silliness where I am inviting national quirky entertainers to come to Austin and UT. (Check out Laughing Squid for an idea of who I'm considering.)
Mike Litt for Homecoming King T-Shirts change color in the sun and glow in the dark, are printed on high quality Hanes Beefy T's, and come in Small through X-Large. You can buy one for $10 and/or talk to me every day on the West Mall. Voting is on March 2 and 3.
